Statement by the Government Spokesman
Mr. Michalis Papapetrou
on the meeting of President Clerides
with US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright

September 22, 1999

The President of the Republic held a very constructive meeting with the Secretary of State concerning the efforts to resume intercommunal talks under the auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in an effort to achieve a breakthrough and resolve the Cyprus problem.

During this meeting all aspects were examined and it was stressed from the Cypriot side the need to proceed to implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1250 which requests for resumption of these talks without preconditions.

Mr. Clerides repeated the position that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to participate in these talks on absolutely equal footing. Mr. Clerides is ready to participate in these talks as a representative of the Greek Cypriot community and he will be delighted to see Mr. Denktash there representing the Turkish Cypriot community in order to try to make a breakthrough and to build a new Cyprus state. In this respect various views were exchanged and our side is hopeful that soon the Secretary-General in compliance with the resolutions will address the invitations.
