2. The main developments in 1998 compared to 1997, were:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles newly registered during 1998
increased significantly by 21,8% to 38.798 from 31.857 in 1997.
(b) Private saloon cars registrations increased by 22,1% to 23.403 in 1998
from 19,164 in 1997. This was the result of a significant rise in registrations of used
cars, by 34,0% during 1998 which reached 17.035 or 72,8% of the total private saloon cars
registrations while new cars were 6.368 or 27,2%l.
(c) Goods conveyance vehicles increased to 7.422 in 1998 compared to 6.284
in 1997, thus recording an increase of 18,1%. Light goods vehicles increased by 19,1% to
6.883 from 5.780 in 1997 and heavy goods vehicles increased by 6,9% to 539 in 1998 from
504 in 1997.
(d) Mechanised cycles registrations increased 27,3% and reached to 5.795
in 1998 from 4.552 in 1997.
(e) Japan remained the main supplier of motor vehicles to Cyprus. In 1998
Japanese motor vehicles accounted for 67,4% of total registrations followed by European
Union Countries with 22,6%.
