Congress Passes Patriarch Gold Medal Bill

Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill that authorizes the President of the United States to award a Congressional Gold Medal to His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. This bill, which reached the required threshold for moving such special legislation on September 5, was formally adopted this afternoon by unanimous consent.

"It is a real tribute to His All Holiness that this bill broke the record for number of cosponsors. A total of 327 members of Congress asked to associate themselves with this honor by cosponsoring the bill. The average bill introduced in the House of Representatives receives approximately 40 cosponsors," said Andrew E. Manatos, national chairman of the Patriarchal Gold Medal project. This legislation was introduced by the chairman and ranking Democrat of the House Banking Committee, Congressmen Jim Leach (R-IA) and Henry Gonzalez (D-TX), respectively, along with Congressmen Michael Bilirakis (R-FL), Bobby Rush (D-IL) and John LaFalce (D-NY).

Yesterday the House of Representatives also overwhelmingly passed a resolution authorizing the use of the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol Building to honor Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with this Congressional Gold Medal. This legislation, introduced by Congressman Bilirakis (R-FL), was adopted by a vote of 421 for and 0 against. This ceremony in the Capitol Building is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 21, 1997.
