  • Both Disy and Akel show strong cohesion. More than 90 per cent of both parties come out in support of their man.
  • But Diko still has a problem. Less than half of its voters (42.4 per cent) backed Iacovou - up over the 34.7 per cent figure in the January 8 to 18 poll. There was a move towards Lyssarides (from 2.3 per cent to 8 per cent), Galanos remained steady with 17.6 per cent, while the number of undecided Diko voters fell from 19.9 per cent to 10.1 per cent.
  • Clerides still polled best among new voters but, his percentage fell from 45.1 per cent to 38 per cent. Significant developments among new voters were the jump in support for Lyssarides - from 2.2 per cent to 11 per cent - and the fall in the number of those still undecided, from 24.2 per cent to 12.3 per cent.
  • The poll shows a drop in the number of Edek voters opting for Clerides in the second round (from 30.2 per cent to 18.4 per cent), but not in favour of Iacovou, who retains basically the same share of some 33 per cent. Instead, nearly one in two Edek voters said they were either undecided or would cast a blank.
  • Among Galanos voters there was a clear second round preference for Clerides: 77.4 per cent with 22 per cent undecided or blank and none for Iacovou. Clerides gained ground among Vassiliou supporters - from 7.3 per cent to 37.8 per cent, while Iacovou slipped from 53 per cent to 33 per cent. Another 29 per cent were undecided.

  • Organisers acknowledged that telephone polls had disadvantages compared to the door to door method, and that this could account for the relatively high percentage of undecided voters, even though the elections are only a few days away.
  • According to the Avgoustis poll, 48 per cent of Diko voters said they would vote for Iacovou, 20 per cent backed Galanos, 21 per cent were undecided, 2 per cent were blank, 2 per cent chose Clerides and 7 per cent someone else.
  • Iacovou's candidacy secures the support of 87 per cent of Akel voters. Six per cent of Akel voters said they would vote for Vassiliou and another 6 per cent were undecided.
  • Among Disy voters, 92 per cent said they would vote for Clerides and 8 per cent said someone else.
  • Among Edek voters, 78 per cent chose Lyssarides, 16 per cent chose Iacovou, 1 per cent were undecided, 3 per cent chose Clerides and 2 per cent said someone else.
  • Overall, Iacovou takes 64 per cent of his votes from Akel, 20 per cent from Diko, 9 per cent from new voters and 7 per cent from others.
  • Clerides secures 92 per cent of his support from Disy, 6 per cent from new voters and 2 per cent from others.
  • Lyssarides takes 74 per cent from Edek, 9 per cent from Diko and 17 per cent from others.
  • And Vassiliou takes 46 per cent from the United Democrats, 40 per cent from Akel and 14 per cent from others.

  • The Cyprus problem figures prominently in determining voters' choices, with 38.5 per cent of those polled saying they would put how it was handled above the political or personal characteristics of the candidates.
  • Sixty-three per cent of those intending to vote Vassiliou in the first round say they will give their votes to Iacovou in a second, while only 12.8 per cent will give it to Clerides. Twenty per cent remain undecided.
  • Over 75 per cent of Alexis Galanos's supporters will vote for Clerides in a second round and 49.9 per cent of Koutsou's, a further 15 per cent of whom would rather cast a blank vote than give it to Iacovou.
  • Iacovou, however, will garner many Lyssarides voters, 41.9 per cent, but some 36.9 per cent will turn to Clerides.
  • Almost 65 per cent Rolandis's supporters will also give their votes to Clerides, but 23.9 per cent would favour Iacovou.
  • Of Disy supporters, 95.4 per cent will vote Clerides in the second round, while 2.7 per cent will give their vote to Iacovou.
  • Clerides will also receive 38.8 per cent of Diko voters and 28.3 per cent from Edek. It is notable that none of the Akel supporters polled would vote for Clerides in any circumstances. Iacovou will garner 97.4 per cent of the Akel vote, 49.1 per cent of the Diko vote and 47.2 per cent of the Edek vote.
  • Nearly half those polled, 48.1 per cent, believe Clerides is a good president, while 31.8 per cent believe he is only fair and 18.3 per cent think he's a bad president.
  • Surprisingly, 12.2 per cent of Akel supporters think Clerides is a good president while only 88 per cent of his own party Disy think so.
  • Of Akel supporters, 43.5 per cent said Clerides is only a fair president, as did 49 per cent of Diko supporters.
  • The biggest majority viewing Clerides as a bad president were, unsurprisingly, Akel voters at 43 per cent, followed by Edek with 22.7 per cent, Diko with 8.6 per cent and Disy with 1.5 per cent.
  • Almost half those polled believe the government is correctly handling the Cyprus problem, 29.2 per cent said it had a "so-so" approach and 20 per cent said its handling of the issue was bad. Again, Akel supporters were the biggest critics, though the government received a grudging "so-so" endorsement from 41.7 per cent of them.
  • Of all those polled, just 38.5 per cent were "very satisfied" with Clerides's handling of the Cyprus problem, 18.9 per cent with his handling of the economy and 24 per cent with his handling of internal issues. At the same time, those polled seemed to believe the president was still the best man for the job. On a list of issues and who would be better at handling them, 50.4 per cent believe Clerides is the best for defence with Iacovou and Lyssarides poor seconds with 25.2 and 22.6 per cent respectively.
  • Clerides is also voted best person to handle the EU issue, gaining the endorsement of 53.5 per cent of those polled.

  • According to the poll, 88 per cent of Akel's 1996 voters back the party's choice of Iacovou, 8 per cent are undecided and 4 per cent opt for Vassiliou. Disy supporters (in 1996) are loyal - only 6 per cent said they would not vote for Clerides. The greatest confusion is in Diko where only 53 per cent of the Diko voters of 1996 opted for Iacovou. The next biggest group (20 per cent) were undecided, 15 per cent opted for former Diko vice president Galanos, 5 per cent said Clerides and 4 per cent were blank.
  • Of Edek voters 77 per cent backed Lyssarides, 13 per cent were undecided, 4 per cent chose Iacovou, 2 per cent Clerides and 4 per cent another candidate.
  • The same poll shows Iacovou's votes coming mainly from Akel (73 per cent) and Diko (23 per cent). New voters represent 3 per cent and others only 1 per cent. Clerides' votes come from Disy (89 per cent); first-time voters represent 3 per cent and others 8 per cent. Lyssarides votes come from Edek (91 per cent), Diko (6 per cent) and others 3 per cent. Finally Vassiliou takes 54 per cent of his votes from his United Democrats, 42 per cent from Akel and 4 per cent from others.
